Do you feel queasy if you have to turn a light on long after nightfall? Afraid to go barefoot in your own home? Pest problems will do that for you! The following article offers fast and useful advice for solving your bug or rodent problems. Prepare to finally be free of them.

Plug holes that mice or other pests can enter with steel wool. Even though mice and rats can chew through a number of materials, these fine strands of metal are too tough for their teeth. Any opening larger than a half inch should be stuffed. The pests can enter your home through very small openings.

Ask your exterminator what the risks of using their pesticides are. Everything comes with some level of risk, and some chemicals can be very dangerous for children or pets. If your exterminator is unsure you should find out before you let them proceed. It is definitely better to be safe than sorry.

You should always fix any leaks in the plumbing of your house. You will also want to look for any other sources of water lying around. A place people often look is under their houseplants. Bugs tend to go places in which they can find water so they can drink and breed.

An easy way to control pests around your home is to always put food in air tight containers. Bugs are attracted all kinds of human food. When you reduce the access to this food by placing in air tight containers, you will reduce the chances of having a pest control problem.

If you have any leaky pipes or anything that drips water, make sure that you get them repaired. Leaving water around is a good way of keeping pests in your home. They will not want to leave because you are giving them a way to get the water that they need.

You may believe that your home has no signs of pest problems? However, you should still regularly check your entire home. If your house is underground, you might have underground termites. Damp basements, closets and crawl spaces should be evaluated to ensure that no infestation has occurred.

Electronic pest repellents often work well. The quiet buzzing emitted by these devices plugged into outlets in each room repels rodents. You might be able to hear these repellents, but they are not dangerous for humans and pets. Rodents, on the other hand, aren’t fond of the sound, and will evacuate the area.

Carpenter ants are attracted to damp wood; therefore, if you notice an increase in carpenter ants, check your pipes and roof for leaks. Once you have found where your problem is located, fix the leak and replace the wood to help quickly rid your home of carpenter ants. You may also want to call in a pest-control expert to treat your home.

Increase the frequency that you take the garbage out during the course of the year. Sometimes, you may not take the garbage out enough, which can cause odors that can attract pests. Instead of bringing the garbage out once per week, you can take it out once every two or three days.

Sometimes calling a professional exterminator is a necessity. While many do it yourself, remedies work wonderfully, infestations can reach beyond the control of your average house owner. While it may be more expensive to call in a professional or service, it is definitely worth it to effectively rid your home of pests.

You can use steel wool to fill in mouse holes. The mice or rats will eat it and they’ll end up dying. Wood putty mixed with steel wool makes for a great spackle.

Use borax and sugar to keep ants out of your home. Get a quart jar and mix within it a cup of both sugar and borax. Punch some holes in the lid of the jar. Sprinkle your mixture around the exterior foundation of your house. Also sprinkle along inside baseboards. The sugar attracts ants, but the borax poisons them.

You need to discover the ways bugs are getting into the house. Your window may have a tiny gap, which could cause spiders to enter, or perhaps your pet is bringing in outside insects. Determining the source of the problem allows you to eliminate it.

The recycling bins in your home may be attracting pests. You should keep it outside. If you cannot do this, make sure all containers are completely rinsed. A sealed container is the best option to help keep pests away from your recycling and garbage areas.

Although you should try to prevent using pesticides to get rid of pests when you can, if it is necessary to use one, then make sure you select the right one. Read the label of a pesticide so that you can be aware of exactly where you can use the pesticide. You don’t want to use it in the wrong place where you can put others in harm. If you are searching for a pesticide to eliminate a certain pest, make sure you actually see the pest on the label before using it.

Boric acid can eradicate a whole colony of silverfish if used right! Place a small measured amount of household cleaner containing boric acid into hard to reach places. Silverfish will usually feel attracted to the acid and carry it back to their nests. This is said to have killed colonies of silverfish in a short amount of time.

If you live in an apartment, condo, or any other multi-unit building, make sure your pest control methods aren’t negatively affecting neighbors. Also make sure that your neighbors ensure that their apartments aren’t infested as well. Sometimes the entire apartment or condo building is infested and measures must be taken beyond your unit.

Nocturnal creatures can turn your home into a horror show; resolve to do something about it fast. Hopefully this article has given you a few ideas to get you started. A major key is trying to stay one step ahead of the pest population, so work to get rid of them, and make sure they stay away for good!

Keep garbage away from your house. You obviously have to throw out your household trash every day, but make sure that you keep the cans as far from your house as you can. Don’t forget to cover the trash cans as well. Animals will smell the garbage, and try to get into the house if they can.
