To be a great basketball player, you have to make the ball part of your body. It may seem silly but roll it in your hands, dribble in the driveway, go for walks with it and take it with you wherever you go. The more time that ball spends attached to your body, the harder it will be for defenders to take it from you on the court.

If your opponent is pressing hard, you can give yourself some room to work by dribbling the ball between your legs. Practice dribbling the ball between your legs. Mastering this move can help give you an advantage on the court.

Know your place on the team and play it. You may be better as a support player than as the one who can dunk the basketball. That doesn’t mean you will never make a winning shot, it just means that you don’t neglect other players or interfere with them in pursuit of scoring points.

Move without the basketball. Running the baseline has advantages. You can possibly lose your defender in the paint for a second and become open. At the very least you might distract the ball defender’s attention for just a second. Even if you can’t get open, set a screen for who has the ball.

To inbound a basketball, you need to be able to learn to fake defenders out. You can use the ball to fake in one direction and then pass in another. Defenders often will jump at your first fake, giving your teammate the chance to get wide open. Use this to beat those opponents who try to cheat the pass.

Keep on dribbling until your shot or passing opportunity is imminent. When you stop dribbling the ball, you only have a limited amount of plays you can perform. If you decide that you cannot shoot or pass the ball, all you can do is pivot onto the back foot. You leave the ball vulnerable to possible steal attempts and yourself open to being double teamed.

Although a slam dunk may seem like the easiest and most reliable shot to make in basketball, there is still room for error. Using one hand to dunk the ball can invite turnovers and missed dunks off the back of the rim. Whenever possible, always use two hands while dunking.

If someone is taking a shot from the center of the court, it is likely that the ball will bounce off the net or backboard straight back at them. Keep this in mind if you want to catch the rebound and score some points after they miss the shot.

Practice inbounding the ball. It may sound simple, passing the ball into a teammate from off-court. But your opposing team will do everything it’s power to steal the ball or create a 5-second violation. This often includes tough to work around man-to-man coverage. Inbounding is a specific skill, and the practice can change the tide of a game.

Remember and repeat the mantra BEEF. This means BALANCE, Keep your with EYE, get your Elbows where they need to be and then FOLLOW THRU with the shot. Knowing BEEF can help you automatically get the right stance to be able to make the shot you are trying to make.

Try to make all the way up the court in five dribbles. That may sound like it’s impossible, but when you are able to do that in practice, during any game that you play, it will be much easier for you to glide up the court and take a shot.

Learning to pivot is important when playing basketball. Practice your footwork until you aren’t even aware of what you are doing. Develop your pivot stance, and the practice quick reactions with the ball in hand.

Keep your arm straight in the air when you are blocking a shot. If you angle your arm downwards, you may end up with a foul. Keeping your arm straight will block the ball, keep you safe from harm, and ensure that the person you are guarding doesn’t get a free shot on the net.

To become a good rebounder, learn how to box out your opponent properly. The idea is that when a shot is taken, you turn towards the basket and block your opponent from getting a good position to rebound. The best rebounders have mastered this skill and own the space right near the basket.

It is as important to guard a player who doesn’t have the ball as it is to guard those who do. If you leave that person, they may be passed the ball and can take the shot without you being prepared. Always treat the person you are guarding as if they are about to score.

When you are practicing your shooting, take the practice shots you would attempt during the game. You are rarely going to be open for long enough to get your feet planted and line up the shot, so shoot on the move. Practice off dribble and shooting while moving for better results at game time.
