When you are practicing your shooting, take the practice shots you would attempt during the game. You are rarely going to be open for long enough to get your feet planted and line up the shot, so shoot on the move. Practice off dribble and shooting while moving for better results at game time.

When shooting the basketball, it is important to maintain good balance. Jumping and leaning to the right or the left can result in a missed goal. Learn to jump straight up while maintaining your balance for best results. You can practice this by running and shooting the ball during your practice time.

Never pass the ball and stand still. This is a mistake most often made by those new to the game of basketball. Once you’ve passed the ball, you need to work to get into the best position possible to be passed to again or to grab a rebound from a shot.

If you feel you’ve been spending too much time on the the bench, ask your basketball coach what you can do to help the team the next time you are in practice. Hang on every word he or she says. This will demonstrate your intense interest in helping the team win by improving your own play and should get you more game time!

When shooting a free throw, keep your knees slightly bent and relaxed for best results. This stance allows you to jump vertically without shifting from right to left; thus, helping you maintain an even, accurate shot. Release the ball at the top of your jump for added momentum to the shot.

To be successful with free throws, you need to be sure you’re taking the best approach. When at the foul line, have your feet about a shoulder’s width apart. Now, use both hands to dribble the ball. Bend your knees and and picture the ball going into the basketball as you take your shot.

When prepping for the basketball season, walk around with the basketball as often as you can. Take the time to throw the ball from one hand to the other, and even flip it around your back. Your goal is to improve your hand/ball coordination so that the ball feels as if it’s part of you.

If you have a child that is strength training for basketball, their core muscles should be properly developed. Core muscles include the hips, abs, and lower back. The core links the upper and lower extremities and without a strong one, their athletic performance will be limited. A core that’s solid and strong will allow you to use force that comes from your legs so you can jump higher and run faster.

Bend your knees as you dribble the ball. This gets you closer to the surface you are dribbling on and causes the distance between ground and ball to be reduced. This gives your opposition less of a chance to steal the ball away from you as you head for the net.

A good way to see yourself playing is to have someone record your games. While reviewing the tape, look for opportunities you may have missed during the game. Don’t be too critical, but do be honest. It is prudent that you look at yourself as others do and not as how you would like to be.

Three pointers are a very attractive part of a basketball game. One way to achieve making more three-pointers is by using a drill where you start five feet away from the goal. Once you hit a net shot from there, move back a few feet until you hit another net shot. You keep moving back until you’re on the three point line, and of course you should be jogging for conditioning purposes as well.

To get a good workout at practice, dribble back and forth on the court. Start by running to the free throw line, then go back to the end of the court. Then dribble to the middle and then go back, then to the far free throw line and then go back again, and then the entire length of the court.

Launch your layup jumps from the foot that is opposite the hand you shoot with. Use your left foot when shooting with the right hand. Your body will develop good coordination and you keep your defender at a distance.

You must have a consistent practice routine if you want to learn to shoot free throws well. If you are inconsistent then your shot will be off. The simplest way to get better at shooting free throws is through constant repetitive motions when shooting the ball. If you alter your routine then chances are the shot will not be good.

Use a 2-3 zone as a way to trap opponents. You can do this by having guards wait for the point guard to come at least 10 feet past midcourt. They can then run toward the point guard to trap him. Concurrently, have forwards go to the wings. Your point guard must then launch a pass in a way that is easy for your forwards to steal.

Incorporate lots of squats into your basketball training. Squats help to increase the natural elasticity of the legs and buttocks. When you need to propel yourself down the court, speed is imperative and demands strong legs. Squats will also do wonders for your jump shot and dunks. Bring weights into your squats and you will create a winning combination.

Your mental focus is as important as your eyesight. You may have perfect vision but it you don’t focus in anything but the goal, you will be missing out on many opportunities. Learn to scan the entire court to see where other players are so you know what your next move should be.
