When shooting free throws in basketball, make sure you properly line up with the basket. Your lead foot needs to be lined up with the rim’s center. If you’re right-handed, your lead foot will be the right foot. If your court has a hardwood floor, check it for a dot. If it has one, put your toe on it for a straighter shot.

To be a great basketball player, you have to make the ball part of your body. It may seem silly but roll it in your hands, dribble in the driveway, go for walks with it and take it with you wherever you go. The more time that ball spends attached to your body, the harder it will be for defenders to take it from you on the court.

Play full-court basketball whenever you can. If you love playing, then you probably know a half-dozen spots where you can play street ball or playground pick-up games. While these are good, they don’t give you the practice or experience of getting down the whole court. This matters in fast break situations, both offensive and defensive.

Keep a basketball in your hands or arms as much as you can. This pertains to off the court. Dribble whenever and wherever you can. Just carry a basketball around with you, playing with it gently when safe. You want to be as familiar with a basketball as any part of your own body.

Always run when entering or exiting the court. It doesn’t matter if the situation is a time out or a substitution. Never, ever show an opponent that you are worn down or tired. The psychological warfare of basketball is always waged, whether the clock is ticking down or not.

If possible, the action should remain below your knees. Doing this makes it more difficult for members of the opposing team to steal the ball from you. It will be necessary to bend over, but you should be able to get down the court faster.

Try to place the air valve of the ball in the middle of your hand when you are taking a shot. This is the center of the ball and therefore the perfect center for your shot. If you can do this, you will find you have better control of the ball.

If you want to play better, communicate with your teammates so you know what they intend to do. You are sure to understand that it takes teamwork to play basketball. Do not look at playing defense or offense as something to be undertaken by just you and a single opponent. Everyone helps everyone else. Communicate well with your teammates about the help you need, and everyone wins.
