If you have a vacation home that you do not spend much time at, a home security system could be a worthwhile investment. This will automatically alert you and the local authorities if something happens to your home while you are away such as a fire, break-in or other problem.

At the end of the night, close the drapes and blinds to your home. In addition to giving you more privacy, this blocks the valuable items in your house from view. Keeping your blinds open only serves as an open invitation to anyone who wants to take something from your house.

If you use a social media site such as Facebook it can be tempting to tell everyone that you are planning to go away or are already away. Try your best not to post about being away until you are back, especially if your site is not private. You never know who could be watching and see it as an opportunity to break in.

Always take time to compare and research before investing in an expensive security system for your home. Prices can be very different from one product to another. Look at a number of different companies and get at least three quotes before selecting what you feel is the ideal plan for your home.

Turn the ringer off on your telephone if you are going to be away. A constantly ringing phone lets thieves know that you are not home and could increase the chances of you getting robbed.

Do not leave an extra key under your doormat or any other place that a burglar would look for it. If you know that you have a tendency to misplace your keys, it would be a good idea to leave an extra set with one of your neighbors, or you can leave them inside your car.

Don’t ever place your spare key under your mat or next you a plant box. You might think that you are providing yourself a safe way into the house if you misplace your keys, but you are really inviting attackers inside. Thieves aren’t stupid and also know common hiding spots. Rather, keep your spare keys with a neighbor you trust.

Lights on your home are a great way to enhance your home security. Thieves hate lights. When a light comes on, a crook will scurry away like a cockroach. Motion sensors are good, but having lights on constantly is a better deterrent. The dark is a crook’s best friend, so keep your home lit well.

A bright home is a safe home. They want to avoid being seen. It makes it look like you are home and makes it difficult for thieves to hide. Keep the lights on if you want your home to be secure.

If you want to keep your home safe when you are out and about, don’t leave Spot out back. A dog in the house provides a foolproof security system as he will bark at anyone trying to get inside while you’re out. Have your dog attend obedience classes to ensure he does the best job.

The best types of locks are deadbolt locks. Spring locks are the easiest for a thief to manipulate, they are also the most common on many homes. People will lock the spring lock on the doorknob, but leave the deadbolt unlocked. The deadbolt is the hardest for a thief to access, so use it whenever you can.

One easy way to choose burglar-proof windows is to choose those with smaller panes of glass. Small panes mean that no one can fit their body through, and it also means many panes will have to be broken to gain access. You can also use shatter-proof glass for a similar effect.

Build a good relationship with your neighbors. Crime is less likely in areas where the neighbors co-operate with other, keeping an eye out for suspicious behavior. Don’t be afraid to make the first move. Offer to watch your neighbor’s property when they go on vacation. In the future, they can return the favor.

Have someone you trust come and cut your lawn if you will be out of town for awhile. If you do not want to hire someone, have a family member or friend do it. If you grass gets too high, burglars will know that no one is home, giving them the desire to break into your home.

If you let any service or delivery people into your home, make sure you check your window locks. Unscrupulous workers will sometimes use a legitimate job to “case” a home, leaving a back window unlocked for easy entry when they return later. Do a quick check after anyone you don’t know well has had access.

Ask about the training for employees before you hire a security company. You want to know that the people who are actually installing your equipment or monitoring your home have been properly trained to do their job. If your company is local, consider paying a visit to the office to meet some of the employees too. Knowing that qualified people are behind the company can give you extra peace of mind when making security decisions.

When you go on vacation, arrange to have your mail and newspaper temporarily suspended until you return. When newspapers pile up in front of your house, this tells potential burglars that no one is home. This can make your house a possible target for the next burglary. By suspending delivery service, you will avoid this problem.

Instead of making sure you have a spare key somewhere for the burglar to find, take a different approach. You still need a spare key, but you should wrap it in some foil, burying it in your yard. When you need it, it will be easy to find with a metal detector. Of course, to take advantage of this step, you need one of those!
