Do you know everything you want to know about the popular game of basketball? You are certainly not alone. Very few basketball lovers can play at a high level. This article is going to teach you some of the things that the pros know.

If you are trying to figure out how to improve your ability to pass in basketball, think visualization. Visualizing where the player you’re going to pass to is going and will be by the time the ball reaches him is crucial. Being able to predict the exact spot will result in amazing passes!

Practice as many different shots as you can. You never know when you will need one during a game. If you only practice bank shots, then you will feel less comfortable making a 3-point shot or a lay-up. Practice them all and you will see improvements in all of your shots.

If you play serious team basketball, jump rope for thirty minutes before practice sessions. You’ll get used to playing basketball already winded and tired. Doing this can make you very prepared to make shots in late game situations, as your conditioning is already a notch above anyone else just showing up to practice.

As you develop your ability to shoot a basketball, try practicing on one foot only. This will improve many areas of your play, including accuracy when shooting. As you get better, move to practicing your shot from greater distances. Only after you master the basic techniques will you truly get better at long distance shots.

Never have your back to the ball so that you’re ready for anything in a basketball game. You must always be prepared to receive a pass and you need to know where players are on the court. Maintain awareness of open areas on the ball court that may allow you to quickly score a basket.

Your defensive game will be more successful if you know your opponents. Study video tape on your opponent and read over any scouting reports. Pay attention to dominant hands. Once you start to get to know the other team, you can do a lot better when you’re on defense. A smart defensive player is a strong one.

Always know what spots on the court players are good at scoring from. You want to know this about yourself so you can make high percentage shots. You want to know this about teammates so you can pass the ball to them when they are in a killspot and open. When possible, know this about opponents in order to defend them better.

Keep a basketball in your hands or arms as much as you can. This pertains to off the court. Dribble whenever and wherever you can. Just carry a basketball around with you, playing with it gently when safe. You want to be as familiar with a basketball as any part of your own body.

Add stretching to your warm up, cool down, and work out routines. Stretching helps give you a wider range of motion with your arms and legs. That’s critical to basketball. It’ll allow you to do things with the basketball that others will find impossible, including between the leg dribbling and behind the back passing.

If your defender has their left foot forward, your right sided dribble won’t work. To get around them, crossover the ball to your left and step your right foot outside theirs. Dribble on the left a few times as you slide by and you will be on your way to scoring.

Have you ever ran out of gas on the court? No matter if you play for a team or as a hobby with friends, you want to be able to last. It takes more than just playing the game during practice to help build your stamina. Taking up some long-distance running and practicing different sprint drills can help.

Rebounding is one of the major keys to winning a game as any coach will tell you. Therefore, it’s important to practice getting rebounds, and part of this practice should be spent blocking people out. As well, when you’re by yourself, hop to it with that energy, and go get that rebound!

Keep your eyes on the court when you dribble. You want to be able to see an open teammate to pass the ball to, and you will also be able to keep an eye out for people trying to take the ball from you. Get very good at dribbling while keeping your eyes up.

You cannot stand under the net in a static manner if you want to catch a rebound. Where the ball will end up changes as the player with possession moves, so your position also has to be in flux. Continually readjust so you are in the best place to receive the ball.

Getting rebounds help your team get or keep control of the ball. Predict where the basketball may go and keep moving. Where the ball ends up depends on where the original shot was made, the force of the shot and where the ball hits the basket or backboard. It is more difficult to predict the position of the ball for longer shots.

Organize some fun informal basketball games with your teammates. It’s not always about the full court and the teamwork. Sometimes it’s about building camaraderie, and silly basketball games like HORSE and Around The Horn can bring a team closer together. Plus, they help you improve your basketball skills while you’re at it!

Avoid arguing with officials and referees. If you disagree with the call, you can ask the official questions about it. But, you shouldn’t start yelling at them or getting into their faces if you wish to be a team player. These officials don’t have an easy job so you have to be patient with them and keep going with the game.

It may be the case that you liked basketball, but didn’t know much about it prior to this post. However, after you’ve gathered additional knowledge about the game through this article, maybe you feel like getting out on the court and being a pro yourself. Therefore, take this advice with you, go out and play a game!

A player’s free-throw percentage is generally much higher than their field goal percentage. While part of this has to do with being in action with defenders right on you when shooting field goals, the other part is the dedicated form and practice put into this “free” shot. Be sure you spend some time practicing your free throws during each practice.
