Improve Your Life With These Good Home Security Tips

If you had to find a way to keep your home secure and safe, what would you use? Some people would buy a gun or some other kind of weapon, but this doesn’t help if you are away from home. For times like these, you need home security, which you can learn about below.

If you happen to lose your keys change your locks right away. There is no telling where your keys are and if someone has them, they may end up paying your house an uninvited visit. Changing your locks is a much better option and can assure that your house is safe from losing your keys.

Always take time to compare and research before investing in an expensive security system for your home. Prices can be very different from one product to another. Get at least 3 quotes from security system companies and compare features and services as well as monthly costs.

If you need to store firewood, keep it at least 30 yards from your home. This is a combustible item, which can cause serious damage to your home if it catches fire. Buy a shed or isolate a section of your backyard for all items that you need to store that fit this description.

Install outside lighting to deter intruders, especially if you live on a dark street or a rural area. To save electricity and enhance the surprise factor, install motion detecting light fixtures that only activate when there is activity. Mount these fixtures, using bright lights, at entrances and other potential points of unauthorized entry.

Install timers on your indoor lights. If you are planning on being away from home after dark, timers can make your home look occupied. This is especially useful if you are planning a vacation or other extended stay away from home. Make sure the timer is set differently in each room, as all the lights turning on at once does not look natural.

Do not leave notes on your door for family members or people that are coming to service your home. You may think nothing of it, but it is letting everyone know that no one is inside. It is a good idea to give people a call ahead of time and give them instructions.

Hide any valuables in wall spaces. You don’t have to damage the walls to do so. There are lots of places around the home that have pre-cut areas that you can use. Why not take the guts out of an electrical socket you’re not using? You can convert it into a convenient and covert little wall safe.

If you are moving in your new home, ensure all the old locks are replaced. You have no way of knowing whether the previous homeowner is trustworthy. Remember that different families might have dwelt there before this person.

If you have to leave home for an extended period of time, do things to make the home look occupied. Put lights on timers so that they turn on in the evening and off at bedtime. Do the same with the television or radio to really make your home appear lived in.

Never reveal any personal information to someone who is at the door or calling your house that you do not know. Make sure that your children follow the same policy as well, as this can lead to the wrong people getting personal information. This will make it harder for someone to locate and rob your house.

The security of your home depends on your activities outside the home as well. Do not leave your garage door opener in plain view inside your car. Password protect your cell phone and computers that you use outside the home as well. Never keep important documents inside your car where a thief can find out where you live and determine when you are at home and when you are away.

If you see that the door is open, do not enter the house. The thief might still be inside, and you don’t have any idea whether or not they are armed. The best thing to do is call the police and wait for them to arrive before doing anything else.

Once you’ve installed your window lock, melt solder over the screws used. If you leave the screws open. they can easily be unscrewed by a burglar. Instead, filling the holes in will ensure the lock can’t be removed. The point of a lock is to keep the window secure, right?

While posting photos of yourself on vacation to Twitter or Facebook may be nice, it is also an open invitation to crooks asking them to break into your home – after all, you’re not there! Share your photos once you get back instead to ensure no one knows your house is vacant.

Look at the doors that lead to the outside of your home. Pay special attention to the hinges. If the hinges are on the outside, you are vulnerable. Breaking into your home is simply a matter of knocking out the pin that holds the door in place. Change those doors so that the hinges are inside the home.

Homes that have sliding glass doors can be more of a security risk. They can be easily opened if someone lifts and shakes the door frame. If there is no security system on it, you should place a pipe inside the door channel. This keeps the door wedged closed so that it is harder to pry open.

By adding on monitoring for fires and carbon monoxide, you can ensure that your family sleeps safely every night and will be taken care of in the event of an emergency.

No matter how good your security system is, it should be checked annually. Have a worker from the security company take a look at it. When it comes to lighting up your landscaping, invest in 120-volt lights which are not solar powered. While they do use electricity, you can connect them to motion sensors so they only go on if a large mass goes by, such as a burglar who thinks your dark house is perfect for a break-in.

If you want to open up your doors to let the light in, invest in storm doors which have their own strong lock. This will ensure that nothing gets into your home except for the sunlight. Doors with mesh on them are no deterrent to thieves, so don’t rely on them for safety.
