Many people watch basketball and wonder how the people on TV or at their local parks learned all those amazing skills. If you are someone that wants a better understanding of the game, then you’re in the right place. Below you will find a great article with fascinating tips ton how to be a better basketball player.

When you have the ball, make sure you change your direction frequently. The entire court is open to you, and it is important to take advantage of that fact. As you move to the right or the left, make sure you shift your weight accordingly to have the easiest experience moving with the ball.

Improve your offensive game by mastering the shot fake. With this move, players think you are going to shoot the ball, so they will jump up. Don’t really shoot the ball yet; instead, use this opportunity to maneuver around them and take your shot. They will be caught off guard and won’t have a chance to defend you.

Work on flexibility. Flexibility is very important during basketball. This is because you may have to stretch to grab a ball that is in the air. Additionally, increased flexibility helps protect your tendons and joints from the damage caused during this fast playing sport. Do flexibility exercises often and always stretch before beginning any game.

Do sprints in your practice drills. Basketball is a very active sport for the entire game. And there are times in it when you need to pull up your last bit of energy for an extremely fast sprint to the opposite side of the court. Your body needs to be used to sprinting, even when worn out. You only accomplish this through practice.

Play solo basketball in the months leading up to the season, as well as during the season itself. Basketball is usually a team sport, but just because you can’t find others, doesn’t mean you have to just stop thinking about it. No problem! You can still practice when playing alone. Practice pivoting and free throw shooting. You can always practice something.

Jump on the ground and dive for those loose balls. Don’t be afraid to hit the ground hard and get a little hustle on. Not only will this help the team, but the coach will surely notice your improved effort. Team moral is always a good thing to keep in high numbers.

If you want to improve your jump shot, try shooting free throws blindfolded or with your eyes closed. Your free throw percentage ought to be pretty good before you try this. However, once it is, you can use this technique to really get down a fluid and instinctive shooting motion with your arms and body. Just make sure to do this alone in a gym, as to not errantly hurt anyone or break a window.

Proper aim is crucial when trying to make baskets. Ideally, you should aim for the small square found on the backboard. Doing this increases your chances of the ball actually going down the basket. Avoid trying to aim for the next; you are less likely to be successful when doing so.

To become a better dribbler, work on becoming more flexible. The looser and more flexible you are, the better you will be able to elude defenders. Stiffer players are easier to defend. The more flexible you are, the harder it is to defend you. So to improve your dribbling, you need to improve your flexibility.

Always keep your head up while dribbling. You will not be able to see an open teammate if you are looking at the ball. You also will not be able to see what kinds of defenses the opposing team is playing if you are looking at the ball while dribbling.

If the opposition is hot on your tail, pass between your legs. To practice this skill, bounce the ball between your legs so that it passes through as you step back and forth. Mastering this move can help give you an advantage on the court.

To make great free throws, you need to arc the ball about four feet above the net. If you don’t put an arc into your shot, you are unlikely to get the ball into the net. Practice creating an arc with your shots so you can master free throws when you face them.

You need to follow a rhythm when you dribble so you can break the rhythm and throw off an opponent. A consistent dribbling broken up by a fast paced dribble can surprise your opponent and give you a major edge for a shot. Perfecting this can make you nearly unstoppable on the court.

Getting rebounds help your team get or keep control of the ball. Predict where the basketball may go and keep moving. Where the ball ends up depends on where the original shot was made, the force of the shot and where the ball hits the basket or backboard. It is more difficult to predict the position of the ball for longer shots.

If you’re a perimeter player, making good shot choices requires you know where your feet are at all times. The worst shot in basketball is the 19 foot jumper. If you’re in that position with an open shot, simply take a step back one foot and go for the three.

Unless you are under contract as a power forward or center in the NBA or another professional league, you need to spend some time working on your “guard” skills. You might be the biggest kid (thus a center) in junior high school and wind up being a point guard in college. Always work on dribbling, passing and jump shooting.

Reading the above article gave you great insights on what it takes to improve your basketball skills. Anyone can get better, but in order to perfect your technique you need to learn how to play the right way. Use the tips here to help you practice and improve your basketball skills.

Never leave the practice court without taking some practice shots. Do some free throws, lay-ups and 3-point throws every practice before you leave. Of course you are doing some shooting during practice, but this additional practice will help you in the long run. Keep practicing your shooting on a daily basis.
