Kick Pests Out With These Useful Tips

Dealing with pests can be stressful and frustrating. You could hire an exterminator, but it costs a lot sometimes. You should learn to handle them on your own and save some money. The tips in this article should help you to learn more about ridding yourself of pests.

If you are having an issue with stink bugs, remember not to stomp or smash on them. Doing so will release a foul odor into your home. Instead, use a vacuum cleaner to suction them up. It is important, however, that you change the bag after doing so or it will begin to smell as well.

Before you decide to rid your home of pests you should consider the moral implications. For example, if you have a mouse problem you may want a method that just removes them, but does not kill them. These days most exterminators offer this to their customers, but it may be somewhat more expensive.

You do not always have to call an exterminator when you are trying to get rid of mice. There are several methods you can use including glue traps and poison. If you are concerned with harming the mice, you can repel them with specially made electronic devices that emit sounds they don’t like.

Do not leave any food out or unsealed and make sure that you clean up any crumbs or food scraps. Bugs, especially roaches love to get into food scraps that have been left out. Put used food in a tightly sealed container or in a baggie that bugs cannot break into.

Did you know that bugs and pests can get into your home through cracks or holes in your walls? Inspect the outside of your home for any cracks or holes. Depending on the type of material your home is made of, fill them with caulk to keep out the bugs and pests.

Bugs and other types of pests love clutter. It gives them lots of shelter and places to hide. When you reduce the amount of clutter in and around your home, you are reducing the habitat for these pests. Remove old clothes, books, boxes, and other clutter from around your home to reduce your chances of an infestation.

Store flour, cereals, sugar, and other dry goods in sealed plastic, glass, or metal containers. This prevents invasions of pantry moths, weevils, ants, and even mice in your kitchen. Do not count on cardboard or other flimsy packaging to keep pests out. Mice can chew through them, and insects can penetrate tiny openings.

Do not use rat or mouse poison if you have pets in your home. If one of your pets find the mouse, whether dead or alive, they could get poisoned as well. Children should also never be around this kind of bait. Mouse poison can look like candy, so steer clear of this with children in your home.

Make sure that all of your windows are closed when you go to sleep at night or go on vacation. The last thing that you will want to do is to give the bugs outside a free entryway into your house. Seal all windows when you are sleeping or not home to reduce pests.

Keep standing water at a minimum if you want to keep mosquitoes away. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, so if you have a small puddle in your yard you are giving them a perfect place to breed. To prevent this you can walk through your yard after rain storms to ensure that your yard does not become their breeding ground.

Put screens in your windows. Cool summer breezes are nice, but the insects and bugs that can come in are not so pleasant. While it might be true that you just use the air conditioning most of the time, remember that it can break down and power does go out. Be prepared.

Store blankets, sweaters, quilts and other bedding and garments in chests lined with cedar. The natural resin of cedar wood repels moths and other pests without harming fabrics. You can also use cedar hangers in your closet or place small planks of cedar in your drawers or storage containers for the same effect.

If your bugs are still around, re-examine your methods. If you are only spraying the outside of your home, you are actually keeping the pests inside your home. Make sure to apply pesticides in all appropriate areas.

Talk to your town’s pest control unit. These are professionals that can often help you for free. They can come investigate your home and area, and they may be able to let you know if everyone is having a similar problem. Have them come over to your place and give you some suggestions.

Create a break between your landscaping and your foundation. Pests will often prefer to crawl in the shadows and under things. When you leave a clear boundary between your yard and your foundation, pests will be less likely to happen into your home, opting to stay in the safety and cool of the lawn.

Find out about what kind of pests you may have to deal with. If you know that your area has a problem with a certain pest, you can do your best to prepare. You will know how to check for them, and that means you will notice them before there is a big problem.

If you are concerned about rodents, focus on your yard. Make the environment uninhabitable for these creatures. Focus on areas where rodents like to congregate, such as bushes, debris and weeds. Keep a tight lid on your garbage cans, and keep your grass trimmed neatly. These simple steps will keep most rodents away.

As stated before, pests of all types have the ability to cause great harm. With exterminators being so expensive, it is beneficial that you learn as much as possible about removing you pests yourself. Use the knowledge you’ve gained from reading this article to rid your home of all unwanted pests.

Ask your exterminator to use the most effective methods first. Many exterminators assume that you rather give the less potent methods a try first, in order to save money, but they very rarely work. You might as well just use the most effective method so that it is done and over with.

Get rid of ants by tracing where they’re coming from. You have to find their point of entry. Once you’ve found it, there are several home remedies you can use to make sure that they don’t cross through that point again. These remedies include citrus oil, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, coffee grounds, or lemon juice.
