If you’re looking for tips to step up your basketball game, then you’re reading the right article. You’ve most likely imagined yourself as a pro, so wouldn’t you like to learn a few things that would help you play more like one? Whether basketball is a hobby or a passion for you, these tips are going to help.

Never pass the ball and stand still. This is a mistake most often made by those new to the game of basketball. Once you’ve passed the ball, you need to work to get into the best position possible to be passed to again or to grab a rebound from a shot.

In order to help you improve your basketball acumen you should watch how the pros play. You can do this by watching games in person and on television. You are sure to notice the key skills each player has mastered, and from there you can start practicing.

If you’re shooting isn’t what you’d like it to be, make sure that your shoulders are in the correct position. If your shoulders are in a bad position, no matter how good you are, you won’t make the shot. You’ll want to ensure that your shoulders are squared up towards the hoops. You should also make sure that your dominant shoulder is lined up with the rim.

Always keep your head up while dribbling. You will not be able to see an open teammate if you are looking at the ball. You also will not be able to see what kinds of defenses the opposing team is playing if you are looking at the ball while dribbling.

Stick with the same routine every time that you do free throws. You have 10 seconds to shoot, so you can use that short period of time as you like. You can bounce the ball a couple times, spin it within your hands, talk to yourself, etc. Try to be creative and find a routine that works best for you. You will eventually get more comfortable with this shot by doing the same routine over and over.

To defend a person dribbling the ball, it is important to bring your arms up to the ball. When you reach for the ball, starting low means you hit the ball first and not the arm. Hitting the arm first means that you are going to foul — not end up with the ball.

To rebound a free throw attempt by the other team, you get the advantage of having four people on the lane, as opposed to three for the other team. Take advantage by boxing out, putting your body on the person next to you and moving him away from the basket. This gives you the best chance at grabbing a board.

It is important that you learn to dribble the ball without staring at your hand as you do it. If your eyes are always on the ball, you can’t see who is around you. That will leave you open to having the ball stolen by a defender when you are least expecting it.

Sly feet will help you get the rebound of your team mates free throw. Your defender will move towards you, so figure out how to slither past him and grab the ball. By doing this, you can increase your chance to get the rebound despite starting in a disadvantageous position.

Hit the gym and do arm curls during your workout. Weighted arm curls will help build the strength and elasticity of the biceps and triceps. This helps to improve passing distance, as well as shooting distance. The forearms also benefit from curls by allowing you to better control and manipulate the ball.

Try not to pass the ball further than about 18 feet. If you go longer, you will find that it is easier for the ball to be intercepted by the other team. Shorter passes will always be more successful, so try to stand close to whomever you are passing to.

Always run when entering or exiting the court. It doesn’t matter if the situation is a time out or a substitution. Never, ever show an opponent that you are worn down or tired. The psychological warfare of basketball is always waged, whether the clock is ticking down or not.

Try practicing your dribbling while switching the momentum of your body from side to side. Dribbling during game play requires you to adopt a variety of dribbling skills. It would be great if you are always able to go full speed ahead, but more times than not you will need to move and flow with the defense in front of you. Because of this, you must be able to dribble efficiently regardless of your body’s position. This will help you in bad situations.

Walk on all sides of your feet as much as you can to strengthen your ankles. This means walking on the outsides of your feet for a while, then switching and walking on the insides. Follow up with steps primarily on your toes, and then heels. This helps prevent or minimize sprained ankles, which are among the more common basketball injuries.

Practice inbounding the ball. It may sound simple, passing the ball into a teammate from off-court. But your opposing team will do everything it’s power to steal the ball or create a 5-second violation. This often includes tough to work around man-to-man coverage. Inbounding is a specific skill, and the practice can change the tide of a game.

Take advantage of a player that shows weakness with a particular hand by forcing them to that side. If it is their left hand, come at them and stand on your left foot. Keep your head on a parallel with the player’s chest. This will make your stance low and enable you to snatch the ball away.

Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of the game of basketball. It’s time to bring your “A” game to the court. With the tips you’ve read, you just might be the next Michael Jordan. Okay, so this article doesn’t guarantee that, but you sure will make some nice improvements to your game.

To inbound a basketball successfully, you have to be able to look one way and pass another. Many times, defenders will follow your eyes to try to guess where you are going to throw, so if you can look to the left and pass to the right, you will fake many defenders out.

In order to become better at dribbling the ball you should learn how to practice using your weak hand. If you have two hands that can dribble the ball effortlessly then it becomes easier to get by your opponent. Tie your dominant hand behind your back and force yourself only to use your weak hand. Soon enough you will develop those weak hand dribbling skills.

If your child is training to be a high school basketball player, make sure that they train their core muscles properly. This includes their abs, lower back, and hips. The core links the upper and lower extremities and without a strong one, their athletic performance will be limited. A strong and solid core allows force that is generated via the legs to be used for helpful movements during the game like higher jumps and faster running.
