Organic gardening can be a very enjoyable and relaxing activity in which anyone can participate. The gardening experience can sometimes be rather intimidating and overwhelming to a beginner. When starting your own organic garden, you should make sure you choose the right medium for growing your plants. Different plants need different mediums. Many of your seedlings should be replotted into a larger container before you put them in your garden. However, some plants, such as melons and cucumbers, must go from their original containers directly into your garden.

Make sure your seeds have enough room to grow. It is fine to have many seeds in one container before they sprout, but you will have to replant them as they grow. Use containers that are actually big enough for one plant, and avoid having more than one plant in each container.

Work efficiently in your garden. If it takes you thirty minutes to find a needed tool, then you are doing something wrong. Prepare your equipment before you go into the garden and put everything away afterwards. A good way to keep your tools at hand is to buy a tool belt or utility pants with many large pockets.

You can save time by using soaker hoses. Instead of standing with a hose for a long time or having to refill a container, set your water pressure on low and let your hose sit next to the plant that needs to be watered. Do not forget to turn the water off later.

Keep your soil healthy. One of the best ways to deter pests from eating up your hard work in your organic garden is to make sure your soil is good. If your growing medium becomes imbalanced, it will become an attractive place for all kinds of unwanted visitors. Check pH and moisture levels often.

Don’t be alarmed at the amount of organic fertilizer you may need to use. Organic fertilizers contain a lower percentage of nutrients per unit weight than their synthetic counterparts. Because of this, it will probably be necessary to apply more volume of organic fertilizer than is typical for synthetic fertilizers.

Create a raised bed for your garden out of stone, bricks or untreated wood. If you are to use wood, you should make sure that the wood is not treated and is also naturally rot resistant. Cypress, locust and cedar usually work best. Using untreated wood is especially important for veggie gardens, because chemicals from treated wood could leach into the soil, affecting your food. If you must use treated wood, create a barrier, such as with plastic sheet.

Apply baking soda and water to your plants regularly. Just mix the two ingredients in a spray bottle and mist the leaves of your plants. This mixture acts as a natural anti-fungal treatment. Harmful pesticides can be avoided if you use a baking soda mixture at least twice a week.

When starting an organic garden look into natural pesticides. It is a healthy way to be sure you do not lose a great deal of your crop to insects while working to keep your environment safe. There are many pesticides that were once used and are really effective.

Trees and flower beds need at least three inches of organic materials. This adds humus, nutrients, conserves water in the soil, and discourages the growth of unwanted weeds! This will also give your flower beds a nice, even, and finished appearance. There are many organic mulches available or you can make your own.

Keep kitties looking for a bathroom out of your garden with natural deterrents such as black pepper and orange peels. You can also cover the ground around your plants with chicken wire, or purchase a pack of inexpensive wooden chopsticks and poke them in the ground haphazardly. These ideas can protect your vegetables and herbs from being contaminated by toxoplasmosis, a parasite that can be especially harmful to pregnant women.

Try to get a good composition of healthy soil in your garden. Healthy soil is generally more resistant to pests and other negative influences. How can you tell when a soil is “healthy?” Generally a healthy soil contains a good combination of earth worms, helpful microbes, and a good deal of mulch and compost on the surface area.

Use recycled plastic or paper cups to start your tomato plants in. Just put the seeds in the cup, and cover with soil. This will allow you to grow the plants in the best conditions, and it keeps a few cups out of the landfills too. When they are ready, transplant the tomatoes into your garden.

Spread around your dead fish refuse in the garden. Innards and intestines can decompose and leave vital nutrition in the soil. You may use either a composting pile or simply leave the refuse around your garden’s soil. Either way, eventually nature returns all of the plant’s nutrients back to the soil.

If you use an open compost pile to mix and build your garden compost material, place it in an area that is not too near your garden. It is best to leave at least six feet of open area between the compost pile and your garden. Planting your garden too close to the compost pile, where it can come in contact with immature compost, can cause your plant roots to be damaged.

A great tip that can help you improve your organic gardening is to pull weeds the old fashioned way. If you’re truly looking to keep your garden as organic as possible, you should refrain from using any herbicides to kill weeds. Pulling weeds is the best way to go.
