If baseball is your thing, then it’s important that you always strive to be a better player. This not only takes you further with the game, enabling you to have more fun, but it also helps the team effort. So, get prepared to do your part and learn more about baseball.
Aim for hitting the ball to the fence rather than over the fence if you would like to boost your batting average. You just want to hit the ball back to the spot it was thrown from. If the ball is hit high in the air, it becomes easier to catch.
Learn how to hit a ball without chasing it by using a batting cage. A batting cage allows you to hit the ball as hard as you can without worrying about an errant ball going through a window. The batting cage has mesh sides so the ball is easily recovered.
Always wear protective equipment when playing baseball. Just like any sport, injuries happen in baseball. Especially when batting, you need to protect your head. That means you need to wear a helmet whenever you enter the batter’s box. One poor pitch can mean a fastball hitting you in the noggin. That’s at minimum a ringing headache with the potential for a concussion or worse. Be safe.
When coaching baseball, there are a few things you will need to have close at hand. Be certain you keep a good first aid kit, properly stocked and at the ready. Bring along plenty of water and electrolyte drinks to help players avoid dehydration. Have your practice plan ready for each day with detailed drills and broken into manageable time segments. Naturally, you must be certain of having all the right equipment.
Build a good relationship with your coach. When you play baseball, the most important authority figure in your life is your coach. Get to know him, and pay attention to the advice that he gives you. Ask questions and be willing to try things his way, and you’re going to be a better player for it.
Always warm up before a game. Baseball may not look as strenuous as other sports, but there’s still a lot of physical activity you’ll be taking part in. In fact, sprinting on the base paths without a proper warm up can lead to pulled muscles and situations that are much more serious.
While in a comfortable batting position, keep your arms away from your body. Your elbows should be up and away, practically parallel to the ground. Hold the bat at shoulder level and make sure you don’t drop your rear elbow. Practice your stance in front of a large mirror to ensure that your elbows are properly positioned.
When coaching baseball, make sure you have an established practice schedule so all players will know what is expected and can allocate personal goals accordingly. For a great baseball practice, you want to include 10 minutes of warming up, and then 20 minutes of drills. Then, change the pace with base running for five minutes and about ten minutes of team defense and situational drills. End the practice with a ten-minute drill on defense for specific positions, then cool down. End the practice with a brief team meeting.
To be a better player in the outfield, you have to be moving. If you stand in the same position too long, your legs can get tight and you will not be able to run when a ball is headed your way. The best way to stay moving is to take a few steps between pitches.
When the ball is pitched, you must be in a position to run. This means that you should be standing with your knees slightly bent and your feet shoulder width apart. This stance will ensure that your are ready to take off as soon as the bat makes contact with the ball.
If you are in the outfield, learn to read the ball. With practice, you can know approximately where the ball will land each time the ball is hit. Carefully, watch the pitcher so you know the speed of the ball when it crosses the plate. By simply knowing the speed you can judge how far the ball will be hit.
To keep your fingers from getting hurt while bunting, make sure to keep them on your side of the bat. If you wrap them around the bat, the pitch can hit them. You end up with a painful bunt, with no control over where the ball goes, instead of a nifty sacrifice.
Practice bunting, even if you are a power hitter. Bunting is a bit of a lost art in baseball. The idea is to simply tap the ball into play, taking the infield, pitcher and catcher off-guard. This is a smart tactic to move a teammate over from first to second or to even score an infield hit. A power hitter bunting is so unexpected that it really can be effective.
If you wish to get more from a stretch when you’re on first base, your foot should be beneath where your throwing hand is on base. Reach toward the throw, stretching your glove to meet the ball. Step with your opposite foot to the baseball, stretching and keeping that first foot touching the base.
To throw a curve ball, place both your index and middle fingers along a seam of the baseball. As you throw the pitch, slide your fingers down toward the ground in a clockwise direction if you are right-handed (counterclockwise if you are left-handed). This motion gives the pitch its curve.
To prevent a bunt from returning to the pitcher, point your bat handle towards third base, or aim its head to first if you hit right. Aim at first or third base. Keeping your bat properly angled will keep the bunt fair, while still pushing away from the pitcher’s mound.
Becoming that star baseball player, or at least feeling like one, is within reach. All you have to do is continue to work on your talent and skills by continuing to learn new techniques.
