The global fight against climate change encourages developed and developing countries to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. One of the signatories to the “Kyoto Protocol” is leading the world in emission reduction activities, one of which is the research and development of renewable energy. Below are six types of renewable energy sources that are expected to power the world in the near future.
Hydroelectric power generation
Hydropower is the largest source of renewable energy. It generates 77,000 megawatts of electricity. Water from rivers and waterfalls is released through the turbine to produce energy. Although the technology is non-polluting, it can cause damage to marine wildlife as it may change water quality. In addition, hydropower is also very expensive and can take a long time to install.
The International Energy Agency reports that 11% of the world's renewable energy comes from biomass. This technology produces 7,000 megawatts of renewable electricity. Biomass comes from forestry and wood products, industrial processing of agriculture, construction and solid waste. These biodegradable materials are converted to gases by combustion in a gas turbine. In the United States, plant operations are a major source of biomass energy. It is the best alternative to coal because it produces less sulfur dioxide.
Among the six renewable energy sources, geothermal is one of the most cost-effective and reliable geothermal. In the United States alone, it produces up to 2,800 megawatts of energy per year, accounting for about 2% of the country's total energy consumption. Geothermal energy is natural steam from the surface of the earth. The extraction steam powers the turbine, which in turn powers the generator. The problem with geothermal energy is that it is difficult to find a viable land. However, the same technology is used on a smaller scale to power building heaters.
4. Wind energy
Wind energy generates 2,500 megawatts of energy, and companies account for 1% of total US electricity use. The wind rotates the blades, which are connected to the main shaft on which the generator is mounted. The energy capacity is determined by the size of the turbine. Small wind turbines are commonly used to power homes, farms and pastures in the country. The disadvantage of this technology is the noise it generates and the relatively expensive installation costs.
5. Photovoltaic cells
Photovoltaic cells are one of six types of renewable energy sources that do not require high maintenance. It essentially generates energy by using a microchip material that absorbs sunlight. This releases electrons from the atoms and allows them to generate electricity. PV cells are generally reliable and produce little or no contamination.
6. Solar thermal system
As the name suggests, solar thermal systems can also extract energy from sunlight. The system uses solar collectors to absorb solar radiation and then use it to heat water or air that will produce steam for operating the turbine. The turbine will then power the generator.
Federal and state governments encourage citizens to install solar energy at home or in the workplace by providing income tax credits.
