2019-08-07 Sports Comment 2

Sports are a long-time tradition in the world and basketball is a favorite of many. You boys and girls enjoy playing the game and perfecting their skills on the court. One great way to improve your game is to learn all you can about how the game is played and how to play like the pros.

Don’t prepare more for a game than you do for a practice. If you don’t tape up for practice, don’t do it for games. You will naturally take games more seriously than practice. However, you don’t need to start panicking over a game by overpreparing. Have a consistent and calm routine.

When you play basketball, be sure that you remain properly hydrated. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after playing. Becoming dehydrated can negatively affect your game and your health. It is possible to lose up to 2% of your body weight through dehydration. That can also cause between a 10% and 20% decrease in your athletic performance.

When a teammate passes you the ball, make the most out of it. If you have an open shot, go ahead and shoot. If you do not have an open shot or think that you can get open, do the right thing and pass it along to another teammate. They may have the shot that you don’t.

In order to steal a ball from a dribbler without fouling him, start with your hands low and bring them up toward the ball. This way you hit the ball first with your hand and knock it away. If you start with your hands high and swipe downward, you are going to hit his arm and get called for a foul.

To become a better free throw shooter, use the same routine prior to every shot. This could mean dribbling twice, shaking out your head to loosen your neck or whatever else makes you comfortable. As long as it’s quick, using a consistent routine can help your body retain the memory to make those shots after your “ritual.”

Moving without the ball is an important skill to master if you want to become a better scorer. Standing still while on offense just makes you that much easier to guard. Instead, you should stay active and constantly be moving around. You’ll not only wear down your opponent, but you’ll also get more open shots.

Ball control is an essential skill for good basketball playing. One simple drill to improve your control is to use a ball in each hand for dribbling practice. Bounce one ball first and then just a second after, bounce the other. Alternate the bounce as you move down the court. As you gain more control, pick up the pace.

To make sure that you protect your ankles while you play basketball, wear shoes that are a little bit higher around them and lace them up. If you play in lower shoes, it is very easy to turn your ankle. Higher shoes keep you out on the court playing longer.

Become a great athlete. There are few great basketball players out there who aren’t also superb athletes in general. This is a very athletic sport, so prepare for it by playing all sorts of athletic games. This can be running, swimming, cycling, you name it. All of these sports will add to your abilities on the court.

You must disrupt your opponent’s game when you’re playing defense. Take them out of their own comfort zone. When making a move, be aggressive. Do not allow them to decide which plays to make. If you do so, then your rivals have the control. You need to adopt an aggressive style and react quickly so you can interrupt the patterns set by your opponents.

A good rebound player can be a huge advantage for his team. Rebounding is about attitude more that skill. Think of every shot as a potential miss and be ready to position yourself to get the ball. Be alert for team members who are in a good position to make the shot.

Move without the basketball. Running the baseline has advantages. You can possibly lose your defender in the paint for a second and become open. At the very least you might distract the ball defender’s attention for just a second. Even if you can’t get open, set a screen for who has the ball.

Stick with full court basketball during practice. It might be fun to play some half court ball games, but you aren’t teaching your team how to deal with the full court. Plus, the rules of a half court game may be quite different than a full court game. It’s best to practice what you’ll be doing during game time.

To inbound a basketball when no one is open and your defender’s back is to you, you can pull a trick — just toss the ball lightly off the defender’s back. Then step inbounds with both feet and grab the ball and go. The ball just has to touch a player inbounds before you can touch it again.

Keep low when you play defense. Staying low gives you a better chance to play the ball and helps you move more quickly. Stay in your defensive stance all the time. If you find you have to abandon your stance to do some blocking, get back into formation as fast as you can.

Balance is an important aspect in basketball, especially when taking a shot. When shooting, make sure you are balanced both side to side and from front to back. Do not be leaning away from the shot or lunging forward. If you keep your balance on shots, you will make baskets more consistently.

As you can see, there is more to basketball than just getting the ball through the net. Take what you have learned from this article and others, to make an impact on the level of your game. Strive to be the best and put what you know to the test.

Basketball is a mental game almost as much as it is a physical game. Try to get into your opponents head and you can throw them off their game. You do not have to be a total jerk, but a little bit of trash talk can go a long way in making your life easier on the court.

Strength training can be a major help in basketball. Strength and stamina are both needed to excel at basketball. Young children that play can even benefit from strengthening arms and legs through proper exercise. As they reach their teen years, bring weights in to further enhance exercise. The adult years are where strength training is crucial to maintain solid performance on the court.
