2019-09-02 Sports Comment 2

Basketball is among the most loved and followed sports in the world. The fans number in the millions. To really get the most from the sport, it is important to truly understand it. This piece is intended to help people do that.

Work on flexibility. Flexibility is very important during basketball. This is because you may have to stretch to grab a ball that is in the air. Additionally, increased flexibility helps protect your tendons and joints from the damage caused during this fast playing sport. Do flexibility exercises often and always stretch before beginning any game.

Hand signals will help you avoid those errant passes. It can be frustrating making a pass when a player moves away towards the basket. Hand signals can be a great way to find out if a teammate will be able to receive your pass. If no signal is displayed, a pass ought not be made.

Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. Learn to play to your strengths and practice to improve your weak points. Not everyone on the team can be the guy who scores every point. Your position may be better suited on the defensive end. You can only learn these things through practice and play.

Shoot at least a hundred free throws every day. Not only does this make you a better free throw shooter, but it helps all your shooting. You can step on a court any day of the week familiar with the sight and sound of you putting the ball in the goal. This gives you serious mental confidence, regardless of how or where you actually shoot.

When exercise, concentrate on perfecting footwork and strengthening your core muscles. This allows your body to be in balance and be more explosive on the court. You should get a good workout in your hips, buttocks, back and abs. Your speed and footwork can be improved by jumping rope.

Quickness is a blessing in basketball. Try to play faster than your opponents for an advantage. Steady drilling will help speed up your play. Never try though to get too fast that you can’t make any plays. When you play too fast, you can lose control and that means turnovers.

Learn something about basketball every day. Even if it’s the off-season and there’s nowhere to play, you can still improve your game. Read up on tips via books and websites or watch archived games to see what your favorite pro players can teach you. You may be surprised how much rubs off the next time you’re on the court.

Good rebounding is a key aspect of a success basketball player, so practice rebounds and jumping. Many easy baskets come from the second, third or even fourth shot taken. Practice getting your own rebounds. It is very common for a ball to hit off the rim and head right back towards you.

Knowing how to handle the basketball is an important step in becoming a good player. Work hard to perfect your dribble with your weaker hand. The ability to dribble the ball well with both hands will keep opponents guessing. When you are able to take off dribbling to the right or the left, opponents will have a hard time predicting where you will go.

To take care of your leather basketball, only use it in an indoor gym. If you take it outside, the cement and asphalt will tear up that leather. Instead, buy a rubber indoor/outdoor basketball to take to the cement court. They are cheaper and bounce just as well outside.

It is important that you learn to dribble the ball without staring at your hand as you do it. If your eyes are always on the ball, you can’t see who is around you. That will leave you open to having the ball stolen by a defender when you are least expecting it.

Use only your fingertips when you are dribbling the ball. It may be tempting when you are first starting out to dribble with the palms of your hand, but you’ll have no control over the ball at all. When you use your finger tips, you’ll see that you’ll have a lot more control overall.

If you want to be a better jump shooter, learning the proper way to jump is one way to improve. It is extremely important your jump does not drift from side to side. If you begin to drift your shooting arm will lose aim at the basket. Jumping straight up and coming straight down will increase your accuracy and consistency.

Incorporate lots of squats into your basketball training. Squats help to increase the natural elasticity of the legs and buttocks. When you need to propel yourself down the court, speed is imperative and demands strong legs. Squats will also do wonders for your jump shot and dunks. Bring weights into your squats and you will create a winning combination.

Never take your eyes off the net when you are performing a layup. Jump off the opposite foot of the hand you plan to use for your layup. That gets you well up into the air and keeps you protected from the opposition as you head for the net.

If you want to perform your best in basketball, you need to eat well. In order to be ready for practice and games, it is vital that you have the proper energy stored in your body. Good foods that provide these essentials include nuts, lean meats and whole wheat breads. Limit your consumption of salt and sugar.

Unless you are under contract as a power forward or center in the NBA or another professional league, you need to spend some time working on your “guard” skills. You might be the biggest kid (thus a center) in junior high school and wind up being a point guard in college. Always work on dribbling, passing and jump shooting.

Basketball is so fast-paced, it can be difficult to take your eyes off the action for even a second. However, it’s so easy for novices to be lost, wondering what the fuss is all about. Use the skills and practice habits you read about here to take your game to the next level. You can be a real “baller.”

Never try to steal the ball by reaching into your opponent. This can lead to a fake, leaving you off balance. Put your arms up a bit so you can take the ball away if the other player ends up losing control of it. If they try to pass, be ready to stop the ball with your hand.

When attempting to grab a rebound, use both of your hands. Just like you are sturdier when you stand on two feet, you will have more control of the ball if you grab it with both of your hands. This will also help you protect it from any opposition you might face.
