The Panic Attack Advice That Everyone Can Use

Panic attacks can be a frightening occurrence in your life. When you have a panic attack, you might feel like you are having a heart attack or worse, feel as if you are dying. Here are some effective ways to deal with panic attacks so that you are better equipped to handle them.

Consider asking your local government if they have any sort of assistance, like free therapists, for people with low income who suffer from panic attacks. The government would like you to find a great job and pay them more income tax, so often they’ll help you find someone to talk to.

During a panic attack you can be overtaken by worrisome “what if” statements, so a great way to get out of that mindset is to change them to “So what?” For example, “What if I fail my test?” turns into “SO WHAT if I fail my test?” Nothing is so bad it’s worth suffering over!

Using tactics to distract yourself during a panic attack can help you calm down faster. Try counting backwards from 100 as quickly as you can. Work on a complex math problem. Turn on the radio, and sing along to a song that you know. Concentrate on eating an apple. Do a crossword puzzle. Anything that requires focus and clear thinking is going to help you take your mind off of your anxiety and channel it into an activity that will help you relax.

Someone suffering from panic attacks should find some form of exercise that they like doing and do it on a regular basis. It is important for people to realize that there are a lot of stresses that affect their lives. Taking part in exercises that they find entertaining can help relieve some of the panic attack-inducing stress.

During a panic attack, there are some things you should avoid doing because they can exacerbate the symptoms. Calling a friend is a good idea but don’t discuss the panic attack, as this will only place your focus on your anxiety. Do not look in a mirror. You may increase the severity of your symptoms if you see the fear reflected on your face. Try not to sit down. This restricts breathing and does nothing to occupy your mind. Try walking around or even doing light exercises.

To keep yourself calm during a panic attack, immediately start practicing your deep breathing. Place a hand flat on your stomach and inhale deeply until you feel your stomach rise. Not only is this an effective way to reduce tension, but focusing on your breathing takes your attention off of your feelings of panic.

When you start having negative thoughts that would usually lead to a panic attack, shut them down. Say NO every time one comes up and think of the complete opposite. If you fear death, think about life. If you fear failure, go do something you know that you’re really good at.

Stop negative dialogue. Negative dialogue is one of the things that can cause a panic attack. One of the reasons that the panic continues is the way you talk to yourself. Rather than focusing on your fear, learn to talk yourself out of being afraid. Tell yourself that you are in control and will not let the panic attack consume you. Talk to yourself in a relaxing, soothing manner, and remember that the panic will pass.

Find someone to talk to if you feel stressed. The encouraging words of others can make you relax. If you can find someone to hug you, that is even more effective. Fellow human touch is very reassuring and can help you to feel calm and safe.

When you feel a panic attack coming on, write down what you are feeling at that time so that you can look back at them to assess what was really happening versus what you thought would happen. Many people have feelings of impending doom and death which is totally against what is happening in reality. When you look back on them at a later time, you can realize these thoughts were far off the situation.

Try to keep a routine in your life so that you can keep panic attacks away. If your life is simple, predictable, and manageable, you’ll find that less things get you irritated or worried. If you know what’s coming you can handle it when it gets there, so plan it out!

A great way to help take control back from your panic attacks is to compliment yourself and others around you. You are not what your thoughts and feelings are telling you, so do not judge yourself by them. Think about what you truly are and do the opposite of what your panic is telling you about yourself.

During a panic attack, try and rationalize your way through it. Though it is easy to forget, the feelings and thoughts brought on by a panic attack do not control what you can and cannot do. So act in ways which are the complete opposite of what your negative feelings are telling you to do. Keep in mind that going against your feelings is the best thing to do.

Picture the feelings you will be experiencing after the attack, the lack of anxiety, and the return to normal feelings. Imagine yourself on the other side and how these feelings affect your well-being. Focusing your thoughts this way can relieve anxious feelings and prevent an attack or allow a current attack to subside more quickly.

Many people find that if they rationalize their feelings, they can control or end panic attacks. For example, at the onset of an attack, you should focus your thoughts and energy on reminding yourself that you are safe from harm – even if anxiety leads you to believe otherwise. Give yourself a positive mantra and repeat it until you feel it start to sink in.

Having a panic attack is a terrible feeling, but if you use these tips you may be able to reduce the severity of an attack. Find out all that you can about panic attacks, so that you know more about your body and how best to cope with these attacks.

Do you stress out over the fact you’re stressing out? My biggest problem was that I would have a fear and then start freaking out because I was irrational and my fears were dumb and therefore I was irrational and dumb. Instead, I realized that anxiety is a natural reaction and healthy, so I should be happy my mind is trying to help and let it pass.

If you suffer from panic attacks, try learning some relaxation exercises you can use to calm yourself down. Breathing slowly in through your nose and then slowly out through your mouth helps to lower your heart rate. You can also learn to do guided imagery to help you to calm down. The more practiced you are at calming down the quicker you’ll be able to get through a panic attack.

One important aspect of panic attacks is to learn how to recognize the signs of when a panic attack is coming on so that you can interpret it properly. Otherwise, you will interpret the attack in an even more fearful way, which will make your symptoms worse. When you feel the symptoms of a panic attack coming on, remind yourself, “Oh, this is a panic attack – and these symptoms are psychological, not physical.”

Ask yourself why you’re scared to be performing the activity you’re doing, and then evaluate whether or not your fear is valid. Panic attacks are brought on by inaccurate fears that you dwell on until they’re huge and overwhelming, so stopping yourself and correcting your invalid fears is a great way to stop attacks, too.

Panic attacks are terrifying because the person experiencing them has the sudden overwhelming fear that they are going to die. The important thing to remember about panic attacks is that you can control them cognitively. Your brain is taking normal everyday stimuli (a shift in the road while driving, for example), and interpreting them in a fearful way. You can course-correct this fearful interpretation by trying to recall what the source of that stimulus could be. This will reduce your fear and your panic should subside somewhat.
