Tips For Getting Better Sleep Through The Night

2019-08-15 Health Comment 3

Insomnia is, simply put, the lack of sleep. Regardless of the reasons you might not be sleeping right now, you have to know that insomnia is not something that will hold you prisoner. There are some real steps you can take to be sure that you start to sleep again. Here are just some of the things you can do to get rid of insomnia.

Create a bedtime routine, and follow it faithfully each night. You could start by watching a favorite show with a cup of herbal tea. A bath, or washing your face, and flossing your teeth could come next. Get into bed, and read a peaceful book, or devotional, then turn the lights off. Once you get used to the routine, sleep should be the natural next step.

Some people believe that carbohydrates can help you to fall asleep. A common suggestion is to eat a slice or two of white bread before bed with a cup of herbal tea. The carbs in the bread cause a tired, sluggish feeling that is conducive to sleep, and the tea is relaxing, a good combination.

Don’t get too much sleep. If you cannot get to sleep after 30 minutes of lying in bed, try some relaxation or a soothing warm non-alcoholic beverage. Avoid taking naps during the day. If you must take a nap, keep it short and make sure it ends at least six hours before your normal bedtime.

To reduce the likelihood of insomnia, avoid taking daytime naps. Although it may be tempting to sleep for an hour or two during the day, it is much better to limit your naps to less than 30 minutes and don’t nap after 3 in the afternoon. Napping for longer periods will interfere with your night time rest.

A dark quiet room is ideal to falling asleep. Even the smallest light can make it tough for someone suffering from insomnia to get a good rest. Control whatever noise in the area that you can. If there is noise that is beyond your control, get yourself some earplugs.

Too much romance right before bed can be a sleep breaker. Sex can be a stimulant, and you may find it harder to fall asleep afterward. Instead, make plans for romance earlier in the evening, or even morning, and you may be able to get a little shut-eye at night.

If you take naps in order to catch up on missed sleep, you may in fact be harming your chances of getting proper sleep at night. Your mind associates darkness as well as a consistent bedtime with sleep. When you start taking naps, it can start to mess with your sleep patterns and your mind.

Blue light is known to suppress the production of melatonin, the hormone that helps you sleep. Be sure to avoid blue light from things like laptops, tvs, and phones for at least thirty minutes before bedtime. This will help your brain know it’s power down time and not play time.

Get your mind and body ready for sleep in advance. Dim the lights up to two hours before turning in. Practice meditation and void any activity that will make you think too much. Do some stretching exercises but nothing to strenuous. Relax with a cup of hot milk or non-caffeinated tea.

Create a nightly routine and stick to it. It can be as simple as taking a warm bath, putting on comfortable sleep wear and reading a relaxing book. By developing a routine, you are conditioning your body to prepare for sleep. This can help you get into a comfortable rhythm of sleeping at the same time each night.

Can you think back to when you were read bedtime stories each night? Adults can use this technique, too. While relaxing in bed, you can doze off while listening to your favorite audio book. Music can be helpful as well.

While it is perfectly okay to use a sleep aid to help you rest every once in a while, this should not be used as a long-term treatment for insomnia. If you have been having sleepless nights for more than a week, it would be a good idea for you to see a doctor so he can properly diagnose and treat you.

If you find yourself bored in the afternoon, go for a quick walk. That little bit of exercise can be enough to bring your energy levels up and allow you to be a little more tired at bed time. In the early evening, a walk after dinner can have the same results.

If you feel that your insomnia is linked to stress, try kava as a possible remedy. It is a medicinal herb that reportedly helps people get to sleep. It does so by reducing the stress levels. Since the supplement can have bad side effects, be sure to get a doctor’s approval first.

Restrict your actual sleep time to a maximum of five hours. Get to bed at 10 and wake at 3 in the morning. Also, avoid napping in the day. Before long, your body will start to slow down around bedtime and you can gradually push your wake up time to later.

Talk to your doctor to see if there is a medical problem that is preventing you from getting as much sleep as you should. Many times people think of insomnia as a minor issue when it may be something that is quite serious. If you have trouble sleeping for more than a week, you should talk to a doctor.

If you are not tired when bedtime approaches, avoid taking sleep aids. All they will do is create a temporary fix for the insomnia, and they may cause mental impairments. It is a better idea to go to a doctor and address the problem in order to come to a permanent fix.

After reading all the tips laid out here, you should feel better about your insomnia. There are a lot of people out there who have a hard time sleeping as you do, and if you can work on using the tips in this article, you won’t be one of them for long. Good luck!

Are you currently experiencing insomnia? Do you also smoke? Believe it or not, your night time cigarettes may be disrupting your sleep. Nicotine is a stimulant, and the last thing that you need when you are having a hard time sleeping is a stimulant. If you do not plan on quitting smoking, at least avoid smoking a few hours before bedtime.

If insomnia is creeping up on you every night, consider getting earplugs. Many people are sensitive to sound, and don’t even know it. Even quiet sounds will instigate insomnia, preventing needed rest. The earplugs will block out all sounds, and should help you get to sleep faster and stay asleep too.

Although you never want to eat a large meal right before going to bed, you don’t want to go to bed hungry either. A small snack high in carbohydrates, like fruit or crackers, can actually help you sleep better. It can trigger the release of serotonin to help your body relax.
