Practice is the best way to build your skills. You should use your practice time wisely, and follow good advice from experienced teachers. These tips should help you become a much better basketball player.

Watch professional basketball players on television. When learning basketball, it’s essential to see what the best out there do. Listen to what the announcers are saying, too. Quite often, they’ll point out smart plays and unique moves that were exceptionally done. These call-outs will help you improve your skills just by watching.

Learn the positions on a basketball court. Each position has different roles to fill on both offense and defense. There are guards, point guards, forwards, power forwards, and centers. If you want to really enjoy basketball, learn the needs of all of the positions, not just the one you are most interested in.

Always know where the other players are, both on your team and the opposition. You need to know who is close enough to steal the ball from you, who you can pass to and who might be able to rebound if you miss. Staying on top of the game means knowing the lay of the land.

If the basketball game is quickly getting out of hand for your team, find a way to slow the pace down. Your opponent wants to keep the chaos for your team going as it’s causing you all to make mistakes. You need to do the opposite. The minute you have the ball, dribble up court slowly. Or take a time out if you’ve got one available.

Three pointers are a very attractive part of a basketball game. One way to achieve making more three-pointers is by using a drill where you start five feet away from the goal. Once you hit a net shot from there, move back a few feet until you hit another net shot. You keep moving back until you’re on the three point line, and of course you should be jogging for conditioning purposes as well.

Speed and agility is important, but you need to know how to practice to improve those skills. Running yourself ragged by training for long lengths of time or by running long distances won’t benefit your play on the court. Instead, practice sprints and other short bursts of exercise. This better mimics how on the court play really is.

Set up an obstacle course with chairs or pylons and then dribble around them. This will help you learn how to get around opponents while keeping control of the ball. As you get better, make sure your back is to the obstacle as you go by to protect the ball from it.

To make sure that you protect your ankles while you play basketball, wear shoes that are a little bit higher around them and lace them up. If you play in lower shoes, it is very easy to turn your ankle. Higher shoes keep you out on the court playing longer.

When dribbling, try to make your moves below your knee joints. This will mean you have to bend over to dribble the ball and move, but there are advantages. It creates a little more personal space, making the ball harder for an opponent to steal. It also makes it far easier to shake off an opponent for a drive, a shot or a pass.

If you play basketball, you should incorporate strength training into your workout routine. Conditioning training will also increase your stamina. Small kids who play stand to reap real benefits from strengthening their legs and arms. When they become teens, try using weights to keep enhancing their exercises. Then they will be ready to really learn the skills that really make an excellent player.

Don’t think that a shot has to be perfect to be taken. A lot of good shooters constantly remind themselves that the standard goal is large enough to take in two balls at once. There’s also a backboard that sometimes gives a lucky bounce. That leaves a good margin for error where you can make a less than perfect shot and still get points.

Aim your overhead pass to be caught at chin level or higher. An overhead pass gives you the ability to get the greatest length from your pass. It is a good option for a turnover breakaway. You can also use the overhead pass to get the ball to a player who has a strong inside position.

Avoid dribbling above your knees. This will make it harder for opponents to get the ball away from you. You’ll have to bend over, but it will be worth the effort.

Put the ball in your hands as much as you can during off-time. You might have seen ball players holding the ball in random places, and there’s a reason for that. The more you hold the ball, the more you will handle it, and the more you will be able to control it on the court.

Practice inbounding the ball. It may sound simple, passing the ball into a teammate from off-court. But your opposing team will do everything it’s power to steal the ball or create a 5-second violation. This often includes tough to work around man-to-man coverage. Inbounding is a specific skill, and the practice can change the tide of a game.

When you are defending, it is important that you stand correctly. If you are able to move in any direction at any time, your opposition won’t be able to predict what you will do. Bend your knees slightly, keep your legs apart and have one foot ahead of the other a bit.

It is important to know when to make the shot and when to pass the ball to another player. It’s better to work with others to get a good shot than if you’re someone who ruins a game due to a poor shot.

Whether you only play on the weekends or you’re a hardcore enthusiast, these tips will still help improve your skills on the court. Start out with a single tip and expand upon each idea as you progress. You will notice an improvement along the way. You can play much better basketball by using the tips provided.

Follow through on the shots you take. Don’t just lob the ball up there and quickly drop your hands. Let your hands go full the motion completely. Even the last touch of the ball can give it just the right spin to get a lucky bounce. Be sure you repeat this motion every time.
