Try Out Some Of This Simple Home Security Advice

If you are thinking about ways to secure your home and you are not an animal lover, think about putting up a “large dog” sign despite not owning one! A burglar will never know the difference, and you’ll be protected. Read on for more tips on making your home safer.

Keep hedges and vegetation trimmed and away from doors and windows. Large bushes may look nice, but they provide easy cover for potential home invaders. If you can, try to keep an open area completely surrounding the perimeter of your home, and if you have vegetation, keep them well trimmed.

Consider whether your glass door panels could allow burglars into your home. It’s easy for thieves to break the glass panels so that they can reach into the home and open the door. If you have doors with glass panels, they should be secured using deadbolts that require entry with a key, replaced, or fortified.

Check the street address at the end of your block to make sure that it is noticeable in the event of an emergency. If you see that it looks illegible, call your town center to see if you can get a new sign for your street. This is crucial as firefighters or police cars will need to get to your house immediately in an emergency.

Each of your exterior doors needs to have a solid lock installed, which means a deadbolt. If there is an existing deadbolt on the door, check to be sure it is at least one inch long. If not, you should be able to replace the lock yourself. Simply go to a hardware store and shop around.

Make sure all the wood around your doors is in great shape. Rotten wood can be removed in order to get inside your home. Replace rotting wood with fresh wood to improve your home’s security.

Before allowing someone into your house, be sure to carefully check their references. It wouldn’t hurt to also perform a background check. Someone can seem nice and professional on the outside, but they may not be so nice on the inside.

Compare prices from at least three separate home security companies before hiring one. Different companies offer different packages and plans, so make sure you are always comparing apples to apples. Doing this will help you to get the best plan for the best price, and it will help you to feel confident about your buying decision.

If you want to have glass in your door itself or near it, make sure the lock and knob are not within reach. Anyone can break the glass and reach inside, so test it out yourself. Measure the distance from the glass to the lock and then measure your arm.

If you are going away on a vacation, don’t brag about it to friends, co-workers or on Facebook. If you share the fact that you are going to be out of town for several days, you might come back to an empty house. Even though your friends or co-workers are totally trustworthy, you do not know who else they may inadvertently tell who may not be so honest.

Break down the boxes from your new TV or computer rather than leaving them on the side of the road. This will show that you have expensive equipment in your home. Break down the box, and take it to the local recycling center.

Never give anyone the password to your home alarm system unless it is absolutely necessary. Even if you know someone well, you should be very wary about this. If you have to give it to someone for whatever reason, make sure that you change it soon after to avoid any issues.

Don’t post too much information on social media sites. If you are going away on vacation, for example, don’t “check in” at a particular location or mention the fact that you are going to be gone for a week. Even if you think your information is set to private, you’d be surprised at how much information hackers can access, and you never want anyone to know you are going to be away for extended periods of time.

Do not store your vehicle registration documents in your car’s glove compartment. If someone accesses these documents, they can determine your address. Hold these documents in person so you know where they are at all times. They have to be available if the cops pull you over.

Never leave keys to your home outdoors in obvious places. Anyone wanting into your home is likely to check underneath doormats and potted plants, since these are used more than you might want to admit. Be as discrete as you can, or just leave keys with a trusted neighbor who is home a lot.

Make sure that all external wiring is hidden quite well, because burglars look for it when they prey on your home. Having exposed wires will make it much easier for a burglar to cut the wires on your alarm system. Talk to the person who installs your system about these concerns.

Most people try to avoid the neighborhood gossip, but you should try to get them in your good graces. If suspicious people are lurking around your place, the busybody may notice it right away. When you’re on good terms with them, you are more likely to receive word of any unusual activity.

If you will be away on vacation and are worried about your homes security, you should talk to your neighbors. If you have a neighbor that you trust, let them know that you will be away and for how long. This way you can feel more at ease knowing that someone is keeping an eye out for your house in your absence.

Instead of thinking that the only way to secure your home is installing an expensive home security system, educate yourself about other options. Simply putting large, muddy boots on the front porch or installing more locks in the door can help. Remember these tips so you can create a safer home.
