Basketball is more than a gym class sport. There are many places where you can play ball including your local park and own backyard. Read the following article for some great advice that can help you become an even better player.

Always follow through when shooting. A great way to practice is to hold your follow through until the ball goes in the basket or misses. This will give you some clues on why you missed a shot or where you need to strive for consistency. Watch how other players follow through and follow their lead.

Never adopt the attitude that the shoes make the player. The latest and supposedly greatest basketball shoes on the market are probably overrated and not truly tested. They also are likely made in the same factory as cheaper shoes that aren’t name brand. Just focus on a decent pair of shoes and the concentrate on your skills.

There are passes that can confuse the other team momentarily. Try using a back pass! To accomplish this, grab the ball with the dominant hand. Then, move the basketball around your rear. Lastly, flick your wrist in the direction that you want the ball to land. This should should thoroughly fool your opponent.

It is important that you protect the ball if you have it. Dribble to the side to ensure that no one can steal it from you. If no one is nearby, you can dribble in front, but be sure to take it to the side if someone approaches you or you go for the net.

Use two hands when trying to make shots. Have both thumbs on the ball so that they are almost touching. Put the ball over your head but be sure you are able to see what you are aiming for. When you shoot, aim for the backboard or give it a backspin by rolling your hands down while shooting.

Pay close attention to your shoulders if you’ve suddenly developed a shooting slump. Regardless of your skill level, if you don’t have your shoulders positioned correctly, you will miss. Your shoulders need to be squared up towards where you’re shooting. Then, make sure that your shooting side is lined up directly to the rim.

Create and stick to a routine each time you prepare to shoot a free throw. Whatever you do before each shot, from dribbles to body motions, should be the same each time. This consistency will get your body in tune to do the same thing every time, increasing your chance to make shot after shot.

To master dribbling, try the 10-5 drill. Start with your right hand and power dribble for 10 seconds. Slow it down for five seconds, then switch hands and repeat. This helps your arms learn about the changes in dribbling pace associated with a competitive game, building muscles and giving you strength.

Want to try a drill which will really work you out? Try dribbling with two balls at once! This will help you learn to master dribbling with both hands, plus it will build your arm muscles very quickly. You can’t use your eyes for this exercise, so you will learn to dribble without looking at your hands.

To defend a person dribbling the ball, it is important to bring your arms up to the ball. When you reach for the ball, starting low means you hit the ball first and not the arm. Hitting the arm first means that you are going to foul — not end up with the ball.

Even though dribbling movement should start with the feet and below the knees, finish or follow through the movements with your whole body. The right combination of eye and arm motions can actually throw your defender off for even a half of a second, giving you the daylight you need to make a play or pass.

To rebound a free throw attempt by the other team, you get the advantage of having four people on the lane, as opposed to three for the other team. Take advantage by boxing out, putting your body on the person next to you and moving him away from the basket. This gives you the best chance at grabbing a board.

To play the best defense, you have to beat your man to the place he wants to go and force him to go somewhere else. This means that your feet have to move quickly, so practice shuffling from side to side without crossing your feet. This is the quickest way to move laterally on the floor and will frustrate your man.

Hit the gym and do arm curls during your workout. Weighted arm curls will help build the strength and elasticity of the biceps and triceps. This helps to improve passing distance, as well as shooting distance. The forearms also benefit from curls by allowing you to better control and manipulate the ball.

Bounce passes cause the defender to bend over to try to get the ball from you, often leaving them off balance. This is a great way to pass the ball to a teammate, allowing you to spin around your defender while they have no balance, leaving you open to take a shot.

Practice dribbling while switching the momentum of your body from side to side. During the game, you will dribble in various situations. You may see an open court but there are opponents ready to swarm you. This is why it’s important to switch the direction you will be dribbling. It will allow you to escape trouble a lot of the time.

In order to help you make a successful pass the ball should always be thrown away from the defender, this way your teammate can use his/her body to shield the defender away. A bad pass will lead to a turnover which you do not want. Learn how to make a great pass, and your team will succeed!

Whether for casual play, for competition, or just for a shoot around, improving your basketball skills will make it more fun to play. Now that you’ve read all the way through this article, put it to good use! As you develop your skills, you will automatically become a better ball player.

As you dribble, bring your body down just a little closer to the ground. This will make it easier to bounce the ball. If the ball has a shorter distance to travel between the ground and your hand, you are less likely to make a mistake that leads to a turnover.

If you are playing a game of basketball and you think you are in a position to make a good shot, then take the chance. You don’t want to miss out on potential points because you are second guessing your shooting abilities. If the gut instinct says you can make the hoop, then shoot!

Know that you can’t train to play professional basketball if you’re just working on your half court basketball skills. A lot of courts are made to be smaller versions of a basketball court, and that doesn’t allow you to get used to playing a full court game. See if a local gym has a full sized court, or even a school yard if they’ll let you use it after school hours.
