People all over the world love to watch and play basketball. Many famous players, including Michael Jordan, Yao Ming, and Kobe Bryant, are global celebrities. You may not be on their level as a player, but if you love to play basketball, you can profit from reading the following tips.

For lightening fast dribbling, just like the pros, only use your finger tips on the ball. When you use all of your fingers, your dribbling will be much slower. Make this a part of your daily practice sessions until it becomes second nature to dribble with only the tips of your fingers.

As you dribble, bring your body down just a little closer to the ground. This will make it easier to bounce the ball. If the ball has a shorter distance to travel between the ground and your hand, you are less likely to make a mistake that leads to a turnover.

One of the most important things to understand is when to make the shot. Taking a dangerous shot can result in the ball being overturned. If you do not feel comfortable making the shot, pass it to a teammate and either let them make the shot or get into a better position to make the shot.

If you feel you’ve been spending too much time on the the bench, ask your basketball coach what you can do to help the team the next time you are in practice. Hang on every word he or she says. This will demonstrate your intense interest in helping the team win by improving your own play and should get you more game time!

When you are playing in a game, try your best to forget your misses. Nothing good can come from you dwelling on the last shot you missed or the last 20 you missed. Each shot is a new opportunity to score. Stay clam and keep trying even if you miss a few. Dwelling on the miss will lead to you overreacting and missing even more.

A good way to improve team passing to use a no dribbling drill, that is to play the game without dribbling at all. It is tough to play when not dribbling, but your accuracy is sure to inprove. Don’t let it frustrate you, just be patient.

Where are your feet? Stepping your toe in a baseline with a ball in your grip will mean that you’re out of bounds. If you walk without dribbling, you will be called for walking and this will result in a turnover. Do not move your feet when attempting to set up a screen, a foul can be called.

To master dribbling, try the 10-5 drill. Start with your right hand and power dribble for 10 seconds. Slow it down for five seconds, then switch hands and repeat. This helps your arms learn about the changes in dribbling pace associated with a competitive game, building muscles and giving you strength.

Knowing how to handle the basketball is an important step in becoming a good player. Work hard to perfect your dribble with your weaker hand. The ability to dribble the ball well with both hands will keep opponents guessing. When you are able to take off dribbling to the right or the left, opponents will have a hard time predicting where you will go.

To play the best defense, you have to beat your man to the place he wants to go and force him to go somewhere else. This means that your feet have to move quickly, so practice shuffling from side to side without crossing your feet. This is the quickest way to move laterally on the floor and will frustrate your man.

Keep your eyes on the court when you dribble. You want to be able to see an open teammate to pass the ball to, and you will also be able to keep an eye out for people trying to take the ball from you. Get very good at dribbling while keeping your eyes up.

When playing defense, keep your eye on the shot ball. Once the ball leaves someones hands, you need to box out your opponent and then gauge where you think that ball is bouncing to when it hits the rim. That’s the key to being an excellent rebounder. When you see enough basketball shots, you’ll have a very good idea of how the ball bounces. But you need to keep your eyes on it to know!

When attempting to grab a rebound, use both of your hands. Just like you are sturdier when you stand on two feet, you will have more control of the ball if you grab it with both of your hands. This will also help you protect it from any opposition you might face.

Learn to become perfectly at ease with the basketball in your hand. Practice dribbling, power crossovers and even dribbling while blindfolded. Knowing how the ball reacts in all situations will make you a better player. Being able to play as if the basketball is an extension of yourself makes you a more natural player.

Pivoting is essential to becoming a great player in basketball. Work on your footwork to be able to move smoothly. Being able to pivot will increase your reaction time and make you a better passer.

If you are trying to block a shot, do so when you know there is someone to pass the ball to. You should slap it away from the person taking the shot towards the open teammate. That will allow them to get it out of the area and back to the other side of the court.

Always remember that basketball is a game of possessions. The more times your team possesses the ball, the more times you get to score. Fancy shots are nice, but it’s steals, blocks and rebounds that generate the possessions that let you take shots. Hard work on defense can compensate for bad shooting streaks.

Perhaps you are not quite ready for the NBA, but this does not mean that you should not focus on becoming a better basketball player. The advice that you have just read can be invaluable. Incorporate these tips into your game so that you can dominate the court the next time you play.

In order to steal a ball from a dribbler without fouling him, start with your hands low and bring them up toward the ball. This way you hit the ball first with your hand and knock it away. If you start with your hands high and swipe downward, you are going to hit his arm and get called for a foul.

Be flexible in your body movements. You’ve probably already noticed that when you try to guard someone who is in a stiff position and stays very still, that it is easier to guard them and take the ball. Those who are flexible and always moving around are much more difficult to catch.

For advanced basketball players, dribbling becomes a mental as well as a physical task. You have to control how the ball spins, how hard it hits and where the ball lands in relationship to where your legs and feet are. Try changing up your momentum and shifting your body so that your defender is always on their toes.
