The popularity of basketball seems only to increase as the years go by. However, there are many individuals whose knowledge of the sport could definitely use some enhancement. The piece that follows below is full of useful tips and advice to help make basketball a sport you not only enjoy, but understand extremely well.

Practice hitting your free throws. This may seem like an easy task, but in reality, things prove otherwise. When practicing your free throw, concentrate on where you want the ball to go when it leaves your hands. Start by holding your ball before your face. Focus on the ball and visualize it going toward the goal. When you shoot, keep the visualized trajectory in mind.

It is important to practice all the different types of basketball shots. Practice a combination of long shots, layups and short shots. This will help you become a great all-around basketball shooter. Additionally, you should practice free throw shots during your practice. By learning the different techniques, you can ensure you play well during the game.

When throwing an overhead pass, it is best to keep the ball from actually going behind your head. If you do, the ball is easier to steal. In addition, it takes longer to throw the overhead pass if you bring it behind your head. Throw it from over your forehead.

Even though you may miss ten times in a row, you will succeed eventually. Keep calm and focus on your form instead of letting your emotions get to you. This will help you develop good habits and grow as a player. Each shot you take is unique and has nothing to do with the previous ten shots you just missed.

In order to get a good shot, you must use good footwork. Securing a good location is critical when playing basketball. Once you get into your position, you need to secure it. Footwork is the key to either of these.

A player’s free-throw percentage is generally much higher than their field goal percentage. While part of this has to do with being in action with defenders right on you when shooting field goals, the other part is the dedicated form and practice put into this “free” shot. Be sure you spend some time practicing your free throws during each practice.

Learn how to use your hips, eyes, shoulders and entire body while dribbling. This can easily shake a defender off of you while dribbling if you look one way and move another. They are watching your body for clues to where you are going next. Use this to your advantage and throw them incorrect clues to get around them.

Stick with the same routine every time that you do free throws. You have 10 seconds to shoot, so you can use that short period of time as you like. You can bounce the ball a couple times, spin it within your hands, talk to yourself, etc. Try to be creative and find a routine that works best for you. You will eventually get more comfortable with this shot by doing the same routine over and over.

As with almost all sports, good mental conditioning is as important as physical conditioning. It is a good practice to use deep breathing exercise before a game to get yourself in the proper frame of mind. A clear mind, focused on the game, is less likely to make mental errors during a game.

Using a weaker hand helps improve overall dribbling skills. Getting by an opponent should be a lot easier if you can dribble using both hands. Don’t allow yourself to use your dominant hand when practicing. You will improve dribbling with your weak hand soon enough.

Make it your goal to dribble the ball across the entire court in under 5 dribbles. This may seem like an impossible challenge, but it will increase your stride length and your speed. Being able to do this lets you lead your team on a fast break and gets you to the rim that much quicker.

Holding the ball correctly means using just your fingers, and that requires great hand strength. To build this, hold the ball in your right hand and squeeze your fingers together until it flies out and over to your left hand. Repeat on the other side, and continue until your fingers become tired.

Make sure you warm up enough before a game starts. Your warm up activities should be enough to make you break even a just a minor sweat. If you don’t, you’re going to risk injury. However, you’re also going to risk getting winded early in the game, which opponents will take advantage of.

Be careful when attempting to get a rebound off a very long shot. A lot of power goes into launching the ball in the air that far away, and this often leads to very powerful rebounds once the ball hits its mark. They traditionally go wild and can hurt you if you are in the way.

Plant a pivot foot when you catch the ball. This frees your other foot to be a “rocker” foot. You can use this freedom of movement on the other leg to either fake out your defender or possibly set up a different play. Never start dribbling unless you have a reason to do so.

Understand when a pass is a better choice or when a shot is open. It’s more important to get the ball to the person who can make the shot than try to take a shot that will certainly miss or be blocked.

If shooting the basketball does not seem like the right option or if your teammate is in a better position, pass the ball. If you have a good shot at the hoop, make sure you are well-balanced and relaxed. Concentrate on the basket, bend your knees, improve your grip if necessary and make the shot.

People from every corner of the globe love basketball, both as players and as spectators. To really maximize your appreciation of basketball, it pays to spend the time necessary to become thoroughly acquainted with its ins and outs. Review the points in this article as you go forward, and you will be a hoops expert in no time.

Never show mercy to an opponent. This doesn’t mean physically beating them down or accidentally stepping on a floored opponent. What it does mean is that you will have games or periods where your team is clearly better than the opposition. Don’t start slacking because of this. Compete against yourself and play your best always. You get better, and you always want to prevent being a victim of a miracle comeback.

Keep in mind that basketball shoes don’t last forever. Ask questions at the store or do research to find out just how many games or months a good pair should last before needing replacement. You need to feel safe in the quality of your footwear when moving on the court.
